Backing-up your Emails in Mozilla Thunderbird

These instructions are for backing-up your email on Apple (OS10.9) Thunderbird 24.5.0, if you are using an older version of Thunderbird the set-up process may differ slightly from what is shown below.

Initial Backup

Right-mouse click on your Local Folders icon in the sidebar, then click New Folder...

Create your new folder (eg Mail Backup) and click OK. You can create sub-folders within this folder (eg for Sent emails) and make any folder combination to suit your needs.

You can now copy emails/folders to this Local Folder by right-mouse clicking and selecting Copy To -> Local Folders -> Mail Backup

Once you have backed up all your mail locally to a folder, you can see where the folder is kept by right-mouse clicking on the folder and selecting Properties...

The Location field will show you the location of the backup, and you can navigate to this folder to retrieve your backups. We would suggest you also backup this folder in a cloud backup.

You can also see the location of all local folders by going to Tools -> Options -> Accounts Settings... then selecting Local Folders and viewing the Local directory link.
